“Rock journalism is people who can’t write, interviewing people who can’t talk, for people who can’t read,” Frank Zappa

I entirely believe in this quote, for the simple fact that this is exactly how I felt when I began journalism. It was as if, I was the only person whose writings were not getting approved, so I tried to do something simpler, and do articles that were based on interviews of people.

When I got out there to do interviews, I wasn’t receiving positive feedback and people were giving me short answers. It was hard starting out, but now I have earned a cover story in the May 2011 edition, which I am very proud of.

“Journalism is organized gossip.” Edward Eggleston

Journalism is gossip in and out of the workplace. Journalism is truly respectful gossip, writing what you want to hear about and saying how you feel about everyday situations.

Being an editor it is very difficult ... listening to 20 different people coming up and telling you about your page or what somebody said should be different. It is very complicated when you have to work with somebody else and you must consider what they want, also.

In journalism, I have experienced both praise and criticism, which I take praise much better than criticism, but I have learned that criticism is not a bad thing; it is just here to help you. Although I feel this way, there were still times, where I felt like everybody was talking about the mistakes I had made with each other but nobody had said anything personally.

I have had the privilege to write stories about extraordinary people and devastating disasters, which both moved me in different ways. Although every reporter tries not to be prejudiced, they are, in a way. Journalists write about things and people they are interested in, and luckily, in my semester of journalism, we had a very eclectic bunch: some interested in the urban community, others interested in the economy or maybe even stereotypes. It is not easy being journalists, but it is rewarding in many ways. I have made life-long friendships and my name will be here for years and years to remember.
