What is gossip? Do you gossip? Everyone gossips. It is the news that you hear and watch and even do it. There’s a quote, "If they gossip with you they will gossip about you."
Does it make okay to gossip if it’s written and published as a news story?
As I worked on the Spartan Chronicles news staff this year, I realized my opinions do matter. As a writer on the staff, I found a new interest of writing opinions and reviews on popular events and entertainment. My opinion and review pieces gave me a chance to express the way I felt.
The quote "Journalism is organized gossip" by Edward Eggleston sums up Journalism in a nutshell. Remember when the whole Chris Brown and Rihanna story leaked out to the public. No one actually knew the truth but you still saw journalists posting stories about it. First, it was said that Rihanna had an STD. Later, it was said that Rihanna was snooping through Chris Brown’s phone and she got upset. Still to this day, the only people that know the truth about the situation are them.
Also a few months ago, Miley Cyrus, better known as Hannah Montana, was seen smoking weed. Well, at least that’s what the media portrayed. Fans later found out that Miley was not smoking weed but another herb.
Sometimes journalists should think before they post. Is bashing someone else’s career what you are really designed to do as a journalist? What’s so hard about posting the truth?
Most journalists depend on sources for their stories. There are some that actually take the time to go find a story. I am sure that you noticed some of the news stories you read are quite similar.
Another quote "Journalism allows its readers to witness history; fiction gives its readers an opportunity to live it" by John Hersey also reflects the subject of journalists and their gossipy stories.
Note to journalists, try to give the people what they want. THE TRUTH!
