This month’s band is the Post-hardcore group from Davison, Michigan --Chiodos. They are a six member band whose music and lyrics are very easy to identify because of their dark, yet light sound. Their music style consists of acoustic guitars and pianos, all the way up to screaming and double bass drumming. They are simple, yet very diverse.
One thing that makes them so unique is the vocal talent of lead singer Craig Owens. He has a high-pitched voice with good range. He is also great at the screaming aspect. I love his voice, but it does take some getting used to and eventually it will grow on you.
The band formed in 2001 under the original name, the Chiodos Bros. Since then they have had only two albums, All's Well That Ends Well and Bone Palace Ballet. Both are very good albums but with one really noticeable difference being that on Bone Palace Ballet they added string instruments for an interesting and beautiful tone.
Alls Well That Ends Well was their debut album. It was released in July 2005. It was an awesome debut for this band with some of their best songs. It is the heavier of the two albums but not by too much. Most of the songs have very obscure and random titles such as, "No Hardcore Dancing in the Living Room", "There Are No Penguins in Alaska" , and "Baby, You Wouldn’t Last A Minute on the Creek" .
Their next album was just as good. They definitely have the same taste for song titles such as, "I Didn't Say I Was Powerful, I Said I Was a Wizard" and "Is It Progression If a Cannibal Uses a Fork?". This album is still post-hardcore for sure but with a touch of classical/orchestra music added. Some people would call this structured chaos. I just call it great music.
Here are my recommendations:
All’s Well That Ends Well (2005)
- "No Hardcore Dancing in the Living Room"
- "Baby, You Wouldn’t Last A Minute on the Creek"
- "The Words "Best Friend" Becomes Redefined"
- "To Trixie and Reptile, Thanks for Everything"
Bone Palace Ballet (2007)
- "Is It Progression If a Cannibal Uses a Fork?"
- "Lexington (Joey Pea-Pot with a Monkey Face)"
- "Intensity in Ten Cities"
- "A Letter from Janelle"
As a bonus, here is a song that was only on an album they put out when they were The Chiodos Bros.
‘‘Lindsay Quit Lollygagging’’
