If you are someone who enjoys writing or expressing your feelings on a piece of paper and would like to share them with someone, then Poetry Readings at SFHS may be the place for you.

Many SFHS students love to write poetry, but never had a place to share their talent or love for it until English teacher Richard Carlander, a poet himself, began to hold Poetry Readings during lunchtime.

"Poetry reading is fun, and it helps students in a lot of ways," Carlander said. "The readings that we hold can help students build confidence, but for the most part, it's really just to have fun.

"It may also give those students who write poems a chance to share some of their ideas and feelings with other students and help them relate to one another a little more," he said.

Some students may think that only people who have something to read aloud are allowed to the readings, but the truth is that everyone is invited.

"We started this in 1998 and everyone has always been able to come in here and enjoy the readings or to support one of his or her friends who will read," said Carlander.

"Students sometimes bring their lunch here, and we also try to have snacks for everybody who comes," added Carlander.

The Poetry Readings are held once a month when B-track is in session. For more information, check with Carlander in room 112 or with your English teacher.
