Sean Burga, a junior at Harding Charter Prep, not only plays in the school band, he also plays guitar downtown.

Burga plays several instruments, including the clarinet, the saxophone, and guitar.

“I feel like I’m best at my guitar, but I’ve been playing my clarinet the longest,” Burga said.

Burga started playing guitar three years ago on his birthday, November 12.

“I started off with Guitar Hero,” Burga said. “I stumbled across this one band called 2nd Thought and they’re made up of teenagers, and I thought if they can do it why can’t I?”

Burga plays in the school band, after school jazz band and is involved in the OBU honor band.

“He doesn’t have a problem with doing more than is required,” said Kelli Taylor, the school’s band director. “He’s a good player and the clarinet section is better for having him there.”

Burga plays in a band with three other Harding students, juniors Carson McKinstry and Jordan Rossen, and his younger brother, Jake Burga. Both McKinstry and Rossen are also in the school band.

“He pushes Jordan, Jake and me. He plays well and he picks things up really fast,” McKinstry said. “He’s a character.”

Sean started playing downtown when school started, in August. He plays near the Harkins Theater by the canal.

“I haven’t really explored good areas of busking,” Burga said.

According to Burga, getting a busking license takes about two weeks and $50.

“It’s a long and complicated process,” Burga said. “I’m in the profit zone right now,” meaning he has made as much as he spent on the license.

Burga plays songs by the Beatles, Peter Frampton, and some modern artists. He still plays rock band and has Rock Band 2 and the Beatles Rock Band, and is working on getting the third.
