Welcome to Tampa, Florida-home to lots of sun, tons of surf, baseball’s Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and fun in all shapes and sizes. Don’t be deterred though, music-lovers, Tampa is also home to the metalcore band Underoath. Founded on the laurels of truth, justice, and all things that shout, Underoath has been blazed into the minds of music lovers since 1998. The Underoath sound is extremely memorable—vocalist Spencer Chamberlain screams his heart out, and drummer Aaron Gillespie evens the sound by peacefully crooning along with mellow sounds.

And there are plenty of the dueling vocals to go around in their latest offering, Lost In The Sound of Separation. Sitting at just over 41 minutes, Underoath creates a recognizable, although heavier sequel to 2006’s Define The Great Line, as the same production team (featuring Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz and former Blue Man Group member Matt Goldman) and band lineup return for Separation. The first single, “Desperate Times, Desperate Measures,” is featured on Madden 2009, Underoath’s first video game credit. Chamberlain openly discusses his drug use in the song, “Breathing In A New Mentality,” and tracks like “The Created Void” and “Anyone Can Dig A Hole But It Takes A Real Man To Call It Home” are a musical punch to the abdomen, even to the most jaded of listeners.

I'd heard Underoath tracks before I bought this CD, and I appreciated their skills as musicians and as a band before I bought this CD. But what I did not do, however, was realize that by listening to this CD, I’d become a hardcore Underoath fan. If the music of the future remains shrouded in fog for you, listen to this album and realize that Underoath just eradicated a great deal of fog. The Sound gives Underoath’s Lost In The Sound of Separation ****½/5.
