Petitions have been circulating around the halls lately in an effort to curb a Grand March for prom.

Little do students know, the idea of a Grand March is not so farfetched as most may think. At first I even felt that it would be a waste of time, why would anyone want to come to school to take pictures two hours before prom?

Class Sponsor Mrs. Jackie Holden supports the movement to have a Grand March along with counselor Mrs. Sandy Wright. They are aware of the petitions going around the school, but they feel that they have a good cause.

“Most of the kids I’ve talked to think it’s a good idea.” Mrs. Holden said.

The idea for the Grand March is to have everyone attending prom to come to school two hours before prom, have everyone register, then wait for their names to be announced, get their pictures taken, and head off to prom.

This could reduce the time to get everyone in a group together for prom as well. Everyone could meet up at school and have the limo pick them up.

The idea came up at a Dollars for Scholars meeting as a way to raise more money for the organization. It was taken into consideration that Merrillville, Crown Point, and Munster also have Grand Marches.

At their marches, the parents are charged a small fee to attend and see all of the couples. Since this would be our first Grand March, CPI photography has decided to donate a small portion of each package sold to Dollars for Scholars instead of charging parents a fee this year.

“It’s nice for the parents to see everyone without having to sneak into prom,” Mrs. Wright said. “Why not have a place where everyone can go to meet up and take all their pictures at once?”

The photographer would be at the march until prom starts, in which they would then move their operations to prom and get ready for group shots. As an added bonus, there will be a slideshow of all of the couples who had their pictures taken at prom.

Though it is still in the planning, hopefully the harsh resistance will go down once some revisions are made. I think it would be a bit strange for three other schools in the area to have something they didn’t like. Instead of completely dismissing the idea, students should speak about what they want in the Grand March.
