According to St. Baldrick’s official website, 46 kids are diagnosed with cancer each day, and even now it is the leading cause of death for children.

On March 23, 21 teachers, students, and a principal will be losing their locks for the St. Baldrick’s for a Cause for pediatric cancer.

The event was brought to National Honor Society by one of the students of sponsor Mrs. Nancy Crooks.

“I saw an article in the paper last year where a guy shaved his head for St. Baldrick’s, and I saved it so that we could maybe do it this year,” Mrs. Crooks said. “Then (senior) Sean Carroll approached me with the idea because his dad had been involved with it.”

Mr. Carroll helped with St. Baldrick’s in Chicago, and at that time he owned Finnegan’s Wade, a local restaurant, in Dyer, so he organized it there. Later, he sold it, and now he is in charge of it at the Quest in Dyer.

“The Quest had their St. Baldrick’s event on Sunday, March 13,” Carroll said. “They had 66 shavees and raised over $50,000.”

Carroll has been participating in St. Baldrick’s for the last three years.

“I just wanted to help raise money for children with cancer,” Carroll said.

National Honor Society and those getting their heads shaved have been raising money in a variety of ways. NHS has been collecting money during lunch hours, had bake sales, and is also collecting individual donations.

“I’ve just been asking my friends and family for donations,” sophomore Adam Momcilovic said. “So far, I have about $80.”

NHS is hoping to raise at least $3,000.

“With 21 people shaving their heads and two charging $500, I think we’ll get there,” Mrs. Crooks said.

Six beauticians from around the area will be shaving the heads during SRT.

“I’m not really nervous; I’ve shaved my head before,” Momcilovic said. “It’s for a good cause. Everyone should do it.”

Mr. Don Bugaski will be shaving his head on March 22 at Hart St. Barber because he will be leaving for Cancun the day of the school’s event.

“I plan on using some sunscreen on my bald head,” Mr. Bugaski said.

National Honor Society is charging a $2 spectator’s fee for those coming to see the shavees, but each candidate gets to bring ten people.

The money raised will directly benefit children with cancer through CureSearch National Childhood Cancer Foundation.

“I’m just excited to see all the bald heads,” senior NHS Treasurer Areef Kasaam said, “especially Mr. Powers.”
