In the midst of limits, derivatives and integrals, four AP Calculus students developed what may be considered an off-topic idea.

Table Tennis, not ping pong, is a new club here at LC.

Before answering any of the burning questions on the tip of everyone’s tongue, I must relay these vital instructions.

“The kids prefer the club to be referred to as the Table Tennis Club,” math teacher and club sponsor Mrs. Joan Loden said.

All kidding aside, Mrs. Loden has given the credit to those she feels put the most effort into the Table Tennis Club. Although founding credit goes to Mrs. Loden’s entire eighth hour Calculus class, a few seniors deserve special recognition: Kevin Parikh, Ted Vlahos, and extra repute goes to Ryan Schuldt and Eric Hallow.

“[My Calculus class] came up with all the rules and base requirements,” Schuldt said. “Every class, after we finished all of our assignments, [usually Eric Hallow and I] would go to the office to talk to Mr. Powers.”

For everyone’s future reference, while the process of getting a new club approved may be rewarding in the end, it will not be the easiest or quickest event to bring about.

“[After the constant visits,] it was just being persistent,” Schuldt said. “If you really want it bad enough, it could happen.”

Well, it is happening. Every Wednesday after school, be sure to head to the gym where the Table Tennis Club will meet to practice. There is a $10 club fee, however, that must be paid before participation in this club is allowed.

Don’t worry, though. The money is returned; just in an altered form. Paddles and table tennis balls will be purchased with club fees.

Any interested student or faculty member is encouraged to join.

“We welcome faculty members,” Schuldt said. “We think it will make [the club] better.”

The word is spreading and the team is growing. So far, there are 75 members.

Because LC is believed to be the only school with a Table Tennis Club in the area, competitions will not be a likely occurrence. Instead, a school wide tournament is planned for the end of the year.

Because the Table Tennis Club is still in its early stages, all the surprises have yet to present themselves.

“When it comes to the Table Tennis club, there are many questions, but no concrete answers,” Mrs. Loden said. “We will figure it out as we go.”
