Students who feel after-school hunger pangs will no longer have to rely only on “Taco Hut” to satisfy their hunger.

A new eatery, The Olive Café, opened just behind that ever-popular establishment and offers a relaxed, yet more sophisticated vibe.

Jim and Sophia Panagakis own the quaint family-oriented restaurant and welcome the customers in a letter on the front of the menu. They promise to “raise your spirits” and bring the Mediterranean area to the guests.

The Panagaksis’ live up to their promises by decorating the restaurant with soothing soft olive, taupe, and cream colors, and faux olive branches adorn the walls. The decorations don’t overpower or clutter the spotless bistro.

The Olive Café, open from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m., serves both breakfast and lunch daily. The statement “All happiness depends on a leisurely breakfast” is stenciled onto one of the walls, and the menu shows that the owners truly believe that. An array of hearty breakfast favorites like pancakes, eggs, and French toast are cooked fresh to order.

The café shines brightest with its lunchtime offerings. The selections of sandwiches, salads, and soups are reminiscent to Panera, yet the ingredients and food itself are far fresher and tastier as a result.

The panini, my favorite selection, is served warm and steamy right off the panini press. After ordering, the old question, “Do you want fries with that?” is asked, but rather than the greasy, salty fries of the fast food variety, the guest is presented with a plethora of oven baked fries.

With the fresh ingredients and sparkling clean, yet friendly atmosphere, the Olive Café exceeds the standard of most eateries in the Tri-Town area.
