If you’re finally tired of your parents constantly telling you to get a job when you ask for something, maybe its time you do just that. A little scared? While the prospect of getting your first job can be intimidating, following these five easy steps can get you off the couch and at the bank in no time.

1. Apply for jobs that fit your schedule.

Make sure to find out what employers are looking for before applying. Some jobs may only be seeking full time employees. Also, talk to potential employers about working around any athletic or extracurricular schedules you may have.

2. Find jobs that match your desires.

When applying for a job, take your talents into consideration. If you are good with people, apply to be a host at a restaurant or a receptionist at a hair salon. Also look for a setting in which you will enjoy working. If you like upbeat settings, apply for a job at a music store or at the mall.

3. Make a good first impression.

On your first day of work, arrive early. It will make a good impression, and allow time for you to get settled. Don’t get discouraged if you make some mistakes. Most employers will understand, but make sure that you learn form them! Remember that you’re not the boss, so don’t try to run things. You have to work your way up from the bottom just like everyone else.

4. Interview skills are the key to success.

Interviews can make or break your chances of getting a job. Remember to arrive early and dress appropriately. Don’t wear jeans, tennis shoes, or flashy jewelry. You want to be remembered as the applicant with great potential, not the applicant with too much make-up or ripped jeans. When speaking, use proper grammar, and remember to maintain eye contact with your interviewer.

5. Now that you’ve got a job, keep it.

Leave your personal issues at the door. In order to succeed on the job, you must be fully focused on the task at hand. Also, feel free to listen to as much gossip as you want, but don’t contribute to it! Employers want a peaceful working environment. If you get caught up in an argument, not only will it create a tense working environment, but it will also show your employer that you’re more interested in the latest gossip than you are your job.
