The Lake Central Tribe of Pride marching band competed at the ISSMA State competition for the first time in six years on Oct. 21. The band placed eighth, a high achievement for their hard work and inspiring performance. Performing The Colors of Feng Shui for the audience at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis was a riveting experience for all of the participants.
Mr. Chris Harmon’s Thoughts
Years in the LC Band Department: 9
Musical Experience: “I’ve been involved with performing and teaching and a combination of the two for a long time. I’ve been a performing musician for well over 30 years. I’ve been involved with marching specifically for about almost 27 years.”
On the Competition: “In the Class A state finals in Indiana are some of the best marching bands in the country, so there were terrific performances from all of the bands that were there that night.”
The Payoff: “I think the reward is having great feelings about how you performed.”
On This Year’s Marching Band: “The evolution of performers- how they’ve come from where they started and are right now is really amazing.”
Melissa Georgiou’s Thoughts
Role as Mellophone Section Leader: “This was my first year as section leader of the mellophones. I make sure everyone is on top of things. I keep them happy and motivate them. During practice I offer advice and I’m always there for them if they need any help.”
Reaction to Qualifying for the State Competition: “I think everyone had the idea that they were going to grab the person closest to them. I apparently was the person closest to everyone, and they all swarmed me and knocked me backwards into the stands.”
On Mr. Harmon: “Sometimes people get irritated that he [Mr. Harmon] gets so intense during the last couple of days, but you have to understand that he just wants us to push into the top of this performance.”
Brandon Hyzy’s Thoughts
Years on Color Guard: 1
On Being the Only Male in Color Guard: “I’m doing the same thing out there on the field as they are, so it’s not much different.”
Individual Practice: “I’m outside whether it’s snowing or everyday.”
Guard Practice Schedule: “The practice schedule was really heavy. [During the school year] we had no practice on Mondays. Tuesdays were from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday was from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.”
His Experience at State: “It was exhilarating. Those doors opened, and it’s the biggest rush ever. It’s the best feeling to walk out there and perform your heart out for the people watching you.”
Katie Byrd’s Thoughts
Instruments: “This year I play a xylophone, but in the past year’s I’ve played a bunch of different things.”
Difference Between Pit and Drumline: “Drumline is just drums like the snare drum, bass drum, and tenor drums, and they actually go and march on the field. But then the pit is stationary stuff mostly, stuff that’s too heavy to be pushed around like xylophones, marimbas, and vibes.”
Hardest Part of Performing: “Getting the stuff on and off the field. It’s really heavy to move and you only have a certain amount of time to move everything in, especially at the RCA Dome on the Astroturf.”
“I’ve performed there before for BOA, but this was the first time for . It was just a really cool feeling because you were only there with the 10 best bands in the state. That means that people go there to watch the best bands, and you being there means you’re one of the best.
