Politics in sports exists at U-E. That much is a no-brainer. However, coaches feel they are fielding the best team they can at any particular moment.
Give that, some students still feel like they should be on the field. People at the school have this to day about the question: Is there politics in sports here? An anonymous source had this to say “ Yes we have politics here, hence why I got cut. If you really want to play a sport, be well known.” That statement was followed by a senior at U-E with saying “yes, people should not be picked because of last name.”
Politics exist all over the country in sports. Just listening to people out in the community talk at sporting events, all over heard conversations about oh my kid didn’t make it cause the coach doesn’t like him or that the people play because they were good at one sport so they must be good at another.
A student who has moved high-schools answered the question with: “ not as much as other local schools. If you know the coach, your on the team.”
There is also a different from of politics in sports at a more competitive level such as college or professional. There exists such politics at a level where you play if your parents donate to the facility or organization. Also if your parents or relatives own the team, organization or facility there is an increased chance of playing.
As a child's high school career continues sports plays a bigger and bigger role in it. Coaches who have their favorites are the ones who's future is helped in regards to college. A local senior had this to say “ Coaches breed and pick kids form their little league years.”
A volunteering senior at U-E who plays sports said, “It is how it is, if you work harder,[the] most talented [athlete] will play but [that's]not how it should be. Tough to find good athlete who will keep working and keep away bad influences.” That's is saying that even though your good, the coach will play his favorite no matter what and its not fair. Another player on the same team had this to say, “ yes affects playing time for kids and its unfair treatment.”
After talking all these people the general mood for th audience is depressing in a sense. All the kids feel as if they coaches put certain kids on a pedestal. A two sport athlete here at U-E says, “ In some cases it affects playing time and giving equal chances to play.”
