The first marking period will be ending Thursday, November 3, and students all over the school are scrambling to get their grades up. How will do students prepare for the first report card of the year?

Because of edline.net, students have found it much easier to get access to their grades. It is possible that this will help students on the first report cards to have better scores because students will have more time to bring up their grades before the deadline.

According to some students, however, it might not have a very big effect, though. Many students don’t look at their edline accounts very often, and even if they did, most saiy they will not change their work ethic very much. Regardless of whether a student cares or not, however, the marking period is coming to a close.

Freshman Nick Mattingly is feeling pretty good about the end of the quarter. He uses edline fairly often.

“It keeps me on my grades, and if I need a grade up, I can see what I need to improve on,” he explained.

Mattingly says that he is fairly satisfied with his grades, but hopes to get them a little better by report cards.

“I have straight B’s which is good, but I am working for A’s,” he said.

So, what are some things that a student should do if he or she is looking to improve grades before the marking period ends? Mattingly plans on doing some extra studying for his upcoming tests.

“I’ve got an end of the unit math test coming up that I need to study for,” he said.

Sophomore Carly Buker recommends that a student should “try to get some extra credit.”

Buker says she checks her edline about once a week.

“It lets me check my grades without asking my teachers and know right away how well I did on something instead of waiting,” she explained.

Another good idea for getting your grades up is to see if your teacher has any help opportunities, like tutoring.

Junior Parker Croom says that he has been having some trouble with calculus, and is planning on “going to the coach classes before school and asking more questions during class.”

Normally when report cards come out, students get nervous about what their parents will think of their grades, but Croom made a good point.

He said, “at least they won’t be surprised to know that I got the grades that I have because they have edline and they’re always checking on me. They can’t get mad at me when report cards roll around.”

So, fellow students, have no fear. Even though report cards are usually a time for stress, remember that it is just another quarter. If you don’t like the grades you have now, and then work to get them up for next quarter!
