More than 230,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and nearly 40,000 will die of the disease. The month of October serves as a time to reflect on those who have battled, won, or lost against breast cancer. The month also serves as an opportunity to raise awareness in order to find a cure, while at the same time encourage women to get a regular mammography screening. One way to spread the word on this particular issue is to have a "pink out."

The NFL recently hosted a pink out, where all NFL teams wore their uniforms while incorporating the color pink somehow to show their support for the cause.  The teams looked amazing and they worked together with their fans by handing out pink glow stick necklaces to everyone who attended their game that day, creating a giant mob of team pride and pink. 
             CHS sports teams have participated in a similar show of support. Also, schools in the area have planned ‘pink out days’ and various athletes have worn all pink as outfits for the day of their games. Some of the teams at Catonsville High that have had their own "pink outs" are the volleyball team, field hockey team, soccer teams, and football.

Sophomore Nathan Hines on the varsity foot ball team reinforces coach Rich Hambor’s statement that “football player are to wear any pink accessories during the month of October." He specifically mentioned that they "wear pink socks and gloves. Some guys even wear pink cleats and pre wrap if they have ‘em.”

The volleyball team is quite often seen sporting their pink shirts the day of their games during the month of October, and sophomore Mina Harrison explained “we wear the pink shirts on to represent our ‘dig pink day’.”

Harrison mentioned that ‘dig pink day’ is any day in October that the volleyball team has a game. The sports of CHS are not the only ones spreading the word about Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but also the staff.

The staff power-group of Colleen Cotton, Terisa Carpenter, Dianne Eff, Sarah Feeser, Karen Hook, and Christy Moore-German created the idea to have a pink out day on October 28th at CHS. They are selling t-shirts for $10, and pink ribbons, message ribbons for out ‘pink wall’, and bracelets for $1. All the money raised by this pink out day will go to support the Cancer Support Foundation and Catonsville High alumnus who has suffered from breast cancer.
