Custodian James Perry received the MVP award from Charles Golder, a supervisor of BCPS building services, in mid-December. The award is given to one individual in each of the five different areas of Baltimore County. Mr. Perry was recognized for performing his job “above and beyond” to make the school clean, safe, and secure for the students, administration, and anyone else using the building.
At first, some may think this is an easy task, but if one looks into the various jobs Mr. Perry has to do, then they will see the hard work that he puts in day and night. All that hard work helped Mr. Perry receive the MVP award.
“I work from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and I maintain the hallways, clean the cafeteria, clean up spills, and do maintenance on things that break or need work,” Mr. Perry said about his daily routine.
Even more impressive, Mr. Perry has been doing these tasks at Catonsville High for 39 years with near perfect attendance. That means he began his career in 1972 when people like Shaquille O’Neal, Eminem, and The Notorious B.I.G. were born
“Mr. Perry’s attendance in his 39 year service is unbelievable. Out of his 39 years of service, Mr. Perry has only had three years without perfect attendance,” Mr. Golder explained.
Of all of the tasks he has had over the years, one stands out in his mind the most. “A pipe bursting in Mr. Wharton’s room was the largest mess I had to clean up that I remember. It was two years ago and it burst multiple times. It also burst a couple years before when Mr. Tomback was the principal,” Mr. Perry recalled.
His work efforts and ethics are what have earned Mr. Perry his award.
“Mr. Perry is an honest, dependable, knowledgeable, and most of all a humble man,” said Mr. Golder.
