“Nothing is Sound” Switchfoot’s sophomore album, and follow up to their debut album “The Beautiful Letdown,” which sold two and half-million copies, has once again proven that Switchfoot is unlike many bands out there.

“We have the best jobs in the world because we play music for a living and love doing it, but we didn’t get into this to try and sell something. For us it’s about communicating and connecting with people in a different level,” says Jon Foreman, vocalist and guitarist.

The San Diego alternative rock band’s new album contains evocative lyrics that transcend throughout the whole album. “That’s pretty much where our music naturally goes,” said Foreman,” I ask myself questions and sing about it”. “Lonely Nation” as well as “Happy is a Yuppie Word” expresses Foreman’s thoughtful, questioning lyrics. In “Lonely Nation” Foreman writes about how lonely people are. “ I remember thinking how ironic it is that you have this generation of kids connected through Instant Messaging and text messages, yet people grow more and more lonely everyday.”

“Nothing is Sound” contains 12 songs and was created while on tour. The band set up their instruments and recording equipment in the dressing room every night and would lay down tracks in between interviews and sound checks. Unlike the previous album, the audiences determined which songs were selected because they’d play them live. The band did go into an actual studio to touch up the album, and thank their co-producer, John Fields, who also produced their debut album. “ He’s quick and passionate about music. That’s a great combination,” said Foreman.

Overall, I enjoyed the album because it has catchy music full of guitars that sound great, that combine to make a great combo with the lyrics. I also enjoyed listening to something that has meaningful lyrics rather than the same meaningless music that is made just to make money.

Switchfoot will begin touring October 17th through November 13th of this year. The tour starts in Ventura, CA and finishes in San Diego. They play in San Francisco at the Regency Center-Grand Ball Room/The Grand on October19.
