This year’s tennis team has improved since last year, but they need to be perfect to have a shot at C.C.S. The season started off successfully, with 3 straight wins. Since then, their record currently stands at 5-3.

“This year’s team is much more improved,” commented Coach Frees.

She believes this because of players’ experience. Last year, the team only lost two seniors. Frees noticed that all of the returners have improved on their game. In addition to that, she acknowledges the girls’ love to play the game in helping them be successful at it.

Last year, wins and losses were even. Now, they have a winning record, but need to win three more league matches to tie for first place in the M.B.L. Those three league matches will be against: Seaside, which they’ve previously beaten; Monterey, which stands in first place; and Monte Vista Christian.

League places will be determined more than likely by next week’s matches. The winner of those games will most likely end up league champions. Currently, Alisal is tied for second place with Alvarez in league standings.

“In tennis, it’s very hard to qualify for C.C.S.,” noted Frees. Unfortunately, C.C.S. qualifications include only 3 total players from the entire league – one singles player, and one doubles team.

Alisal’s top singles player, Emily Ongy, is trying to help Alisal get its first appearance in C.C.S. for tennis ever. Along with her, the top doubles players, Sarah Ramirez and Brenda Luquin, hope to make school history.

With the end of this season, comes the departure of 6 additional seniors from the tennis team. Freshmen Itzel Martinez, Brandy Saldaña, and Victoria King from the freshmen exhibition team give the tennis team something to look forward to.

Coach Frees realizes that next year will be a “building year.” “I’m really proud of these girls,” says Frees, regardless of what will happen this year.
