During rough times like this where economy is in a state of flux most of us miss opportunities to help those less fortunate. Freerice.com has posed a perfect opportunity to do just that with giving us this opportunity right from our computers.
This website has been available since October 2007 and was set up by the United Nations to decrease world hunger and has proven to be quite successful. With donations of rice exceeding
57,278,305,610 this website has been able to save lives throughout the world and feed over two million since its existence.
This is how it works. You log on to the website and it begins to ask you the meaning of a word and it gives you four options to choose from. The website is a great way to expand your vocabulary as well as donate twenty grains of rice to world hunger for every correct answer you choose. Although twenty grains of rice doesn’t seem like a lot at a first glance as you continue, the grains add up; you also have to keep in mind that you’re not the only one playing.
If English vocabulary doesn’t tickle your fancy the site also has other subjects to choose including art, math, science, geography, and language. Even if you’re not so great at a subject this serves as a great way of practice; believe or not you actually learn something.
For example, the art section shows you a painting. With this painting the site provides you with four possible artists. This tests your ability to recognize the unique styles from great artists that still live through their paintings. As with the English section of the site, with every correct answer you give you donate twenty grains of rice.
For mathematicians or those that need improvement in the subject the site offers a multiplication table as well as basic math (pre-algebra). The multiplication table provides you with two numbers that are no higher than twelve and offers you four possible choices. In the basic math section of the math options your pre-algebra skills are tested and improved as well. The problems range from addition to distribution in which they also include negative numbers, decimals, and fractions.
Even with millions of rice donations that have already been contributed to world hunger, it’s still a reason of concern as millions of people around the world are still dying from world hunger everyday. Unlike many other causes of death, world hunger is something we can prevent. Whether the economy is working to our benefit or not the website still provides people with a chance to improve our world and our minds.
