Prom is a milestone event that many high school students look forward to from the beginning of their freshman year. I was one of these antsy freshmen, dreaming of the year when I would attend prom. Prom for me came my junior year, I decided to go a month and a half before prom. At the beginning, I really didn’t know what to expect, still stuck with no date, dress, or appointments. Of course it bothered me that I was unprepared to go to a school dance where everyone checks who went with who, who wore what, and most humiliatingly, who had the same dress as you-know-who. Nevertheless, I was excited about my junior prom and especially looking forward to it.

Being that my junior prom would be my first prom, everything was a shock to me. The difficulty in finding a fellow junior who was willing to go to prom with me, designing the perfect dress, and establishing all appointments at exactly the right lapse of time was rather stressful for me. Especially ELIGIBILITY! But it was all worthwhile when my dress was manufactured to exactly to how I designed it, I scored my dream date, and finally ordered the boutonnière.

I cannot stress that no matter how chaotic the week of prom is, but the day of prom is pure disorder. Between getting my hair and pedicure, I was walking so fast from the JC Penny’s salon to the nail salon, that I had failed to notice the fallen ice on the tile floor in front of JC Penny’s and fell. It’s always something I’ll look back on and laugh about.

Even so, prom turned out to be all that I expected it to be, full of fond memories and lots of fun. With this being said, I was looking forward to my senior prom a little too early, based on the experience of my junior prom.

A year passed by and posters were taped around the school about “A Night on the Nile,” the theme of this year’s prom. Being a senior, prom was the last thing that crossed my mind when I saw the posters that covered the hallways and windows of the main building.

It was not until the week before eligibility that I fully committed myself to prom. At the last minute, I was asked to go to prom by an unexpected candidate, I designed a dress that corresponded with the Egyptian theme, which looked a lot like the Egyptian costumes worn in the Cleopatra and The Mummy movies (white silk and gold), had all my appointments made perfect to the “T,” and was a candidate for Prom Queen. The event that I’ve been waiting for was finally here and seemed to be turning out fine.

The week of prom was a normal one and the reminder of the occasion left my mind, until that Friday when I was asked if I was ready. The excitement had left me, and I knew that this was because I already knew what to expect from prom.

The day of prom, I woke up early, exactly 2 hours before my hair appointment, knowing before hand that I would need to straighten my hair. Then the usual rundown, after the hair, the make up, pedicure, fitting, meet-up at my house, pictures, the “exchange of flowers,” dinner, and then prom.

I won the title of “Queen of the Nile” (prom queen) and managed to stay up past 5 A.M. I do have to admit that there was a slight touch of excitement there, but it wasn’t comparable to that of my junior year. Prom turned out to be everything that I expected it to be, not much less different than last year’s prom, minus a bigger hall and dinner.

Prom will always be a memorable event for me and if I could do it all over again, I would do it all again in a heartbeat. Nothing beats the whole experience of prom, whether it turns out good or bad, awesome or okay, or just plain out breathtaking, once prom is over, it’s over for good. For those who did not attend prom, they are never going to be able to go back and attend, or save the occasion for later. And for the smart one’s who did, we know how much fun we had while those who did not go sat home thinking what it was like. My advice for future upperclassmen, or to those who are currently dating one, attend prom and judge it for yourself. Prom is as fun as you make it!
