The girls’ tennis team started this year off with a new tennis coach and a new attitude. Mr. Voigtschild, also know around campus as Mr. V (and one of the wackiest health teachers) took over the role after Mrs. Frees left Alisal.

Mr. Gil, the new athletic director, approached Mr. Voigtschild because he new of his love for the sport and his experience with tennis that started off back when he lived in Wisconsin and played varsity tennis in high school. Voigtschild also coached a large varsity team at another high school in Wisconsin for three years.

Thanks to Voigtschild the tennis team has improved a lot his year. One of his wishes is to not only make tennis a seasonal sport but turn it into a sport were girls play year around in order to work on their game. He would like to turn it into a feeder program so girls can practice skills and individual performance.

There have been many changes this year. The girls are working very hard to become better in order to win all of their matches. They all know that beating the opponent is not the most important thing, “it’s more important to beat yourself and improve your individual score in every match.”

Maybe it was because of the new tennis coach or because of the large amount of girls that joined this year but the girls tennis team had a very good season.

This year the girls record was 3- 5 overall with only two seniors and a total of 32 members on the team. There top singles players are Brenda Luquin, Alesia Clemente and Cindy Leong. “We are good for the next four years,” said Voigtschild.

Thanks to Voigtschild, the tennis team has grown and improved. This season was a good one with many new girls interested in what the coach calls “an individual, life long and competitive sport.”
