It’s official. The boys track team is the undefeated CAC champions for three consecutive years, and joining them this year as undefeated CAC champion is the girls track team.
For the past three years the girls’ track team has been undefeated in the league. But for the past two years they came in second during the league meet. Not anymore. This year the girls defeated their opponents by an average of more than 50 points.
Although many of the teams the girls faced this year were very competitive and trash talked during meets, the girls held their tongues and let the results speak for them.
Head Coach Donald Fay for the boys and Head Coach Kim Huffer for the girls have worked hard training the teams to perform their best. Being part of the team myself, I can share that training has been hard and grueling for both teams. We practicing through the cold weather and heavy rains, which was a tough road.
"I've been doing track for two years ….I think it’s a great experience that gives you a chance to realize your strengths and weaknesses,” said Nobert Simon when asked what his experience on the team has been like. “I feel accomplished and invincible.”
The boys track team has won for the past three years without a loss, and that is no small feat – it takes lots of determination. The girls track team made history this year by not only winning the championship, but also winning the freshmen and sophomore meet, something the boys track team was not able to accomplish.
Both teams had members place in the state-wide Division 2 meet, something that not everyone can achieve. Runner Xavier Ortiz even qualified for “All State” which consists of the best athletes from divisions 1-4. He recently participated in this meet and was able to qualify for the “New England,” where the best athletes in Massachusetts face the best from Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.
I can assure you that this is something I could only dream of accomplishing.
