They’ve done it! Not since way back in 2003 has a track team captured the elusive Classic 8 Triple Crown, but the Arrowhead boys’ team did just that on Tuesday.

The Hawks compiled 166 team points, while Mukwonago finished 2nd with 141 points, and Waukesha North totaled 128 points for 3rd place.

“This was a great win for us,” said Coach Chris Herriot. “The win wrapped up a great season in conference.”

Mike McFarland and Derek Steinbach led the Hawks with two first place finishes each. M. McFarland’s 9:43.97 in the 3200m run was enough to edge out Andy Lopkowski from CMH, who finished in 9:44.96. He then recorded his second 1st place finish in the 1600m run with a time of 4:27.8. Teammate David Emmerich followed closely behind to finish 2nd after finishing in 4:28.93.

Steinbach, coming off a recent injury sustained in a previous meet, made his present felt in the hurdle events. He won the 110m hurdles by less than .3 of a second after running a 15.47. He followed that win up with another in the 300m hurdles after finishing in 40.23.

“Steinbach’s wins in the hurdle events were huge,” said Herriot. “We certainly knew he was capable of winning both events, but he was coming off an injury.”

Not to be outdone by his big brother, Joe McFarland sped to a 1st place finish in the 800m run. He finished the race in a swift 1:57.77.

Wes Kavalaris, a frequent visitor to the top spot on the podium, found himself there again following his 14-06 clear in the pole vault.

Paul Schiller ran a strong 400m dash for the Warhawks, completing the lap in 51.13, good enough for 2nd place.

Arrowhead’s relay teams performed well, as two groups found themselves on top of the podium while another finished 2nd.

The 4x200m relay squad made up of Luke Ciezki, Jacob Vis, Steinbach, and Kavalaris ran a 1:31.45 in the finals to finish 1st.

Schiller made an appearance in the 4x400m relay and teammates Vis, J, McFarland, and Kavalaris helped as the boys won the race in 3:26.41.

In the 4x800m relay, Tim Hucke, Tim McFarland, Ryan Chapman, and Kevin Carew finished 2nd with a time of 8:19.74.

The Hawks begin their pursuit for a state championship Monday, traveling to Germantown for Regionals.

Arrowhead Wins Myrhum Invite

Compiling 95 points, the Arrowhead boys’ track team did more than just host the Myrhum Invite; they won the team championship.

“It was great to win this,” said Coach Chris Herriot. “We’ve lost this meet only once in like the last 10 years, so we wanted to win this one.”

Despite the Hawks impressive record in years past at the Myrhum Invite, this year’s field was tough. Only a week earlier Waukesha North defeated Arrowhead at the Freeman Invite held at Waukesha North.

“It was good to come back this week and be able to beat North at our home meet,” Herriot said. “We were up against some tough competition.”

North tied for 2nd with Lew Wallace from Illinois, and Mukwonago finished in 4th place.

Senior distance runner Mike McFarland led the Hawks, racing across the finish line 1st in two individual events.

McFarland ran a 4:21.97 in the 1600m run, while his teammate David Emmerich took 2nd in the event with a time of 4:30.66.

Even more impressive, McFarland ran to a 1st place finish in the 800m run, an event he rarely participates in. His time of 1:57.70 is 5th best in the state this year.

“Mike ran real well in the 800 and mile,” said Herriot. “But those aren’t even his best race. He’s really focusing on the 3200m run for state.”

McFarland’s younger brother Joe is usually the one representing the family in the 800m run, but an ankle injury kept him off the track.

Kyle Kluth’s win in the 3200m run ensured a distance sweep for the Warhawks at the meet. He ran a 9:57.90.

Wes Kavalaris captured another 1st place finish in the pole vault for the Hawks, flying over the 14-6 mark.

Kavalaris teamed up with Luke Ciezki, Jake Vis, and Paul Schiller to win the 800m relay with a time of 1:32.50.
