At-a-glance

The Varsity boys’ wrestling team extended its season after a convincing victory over Hartford in the Div. 1 Sectional Finals held at Homestead.

“It was a battle,” said Arrowhead coach John Messenbrink. “The score didn’t really reflect the kind of battle we had here.”

Battle or not, the Hawks stormed to a 43-9 victory, winning 11 of 14 matches en route to a team state berth. Senior Max Askren remained undefeated (41-0) with a pin against Kyle Erickson. However the big matches of the night came with Hawk wins over previously undefeated Hartford wrestlers.

Senior Charlie Fish upset Hartford’s Christian Polega 11-3; Polega had been undefeated until falling to Fish. Following Fish’s big win, Senior Nick Ryan ended Hartford’s Jon Schmidt perfect season with an 8-6 victory at 275.

“We wrestled well,” said junior Dave Hoy. “We won all the close matches and that was big.”

The Hawks are back in action at the individual sectionals held this Saturday . Team state will be held March 3-4 at the Madison Field House.

Arrowhead conquers Classic Eight

The varsity boys’ wrestling team conquered the rest of the Classic 8 after winning the season ending conference tournament held on Saturday, February 5.

“Even though we were wrestling short-handed, we got the job done,” said junior Aaron Yde. “It was a good win for this team.”

The Hawks scored 256 team points, 34.5 more than conference rival Mukwonago. Despite being down two strong wrestlers, AHS crowned six individual champions after 10 wrestlers advanced to the finals.

Senior Max Askren solidified himself as one of the best wrestlers in Classic 8 history after he won the 189 lb championship, becoming only the third wrestler to win four Classic 8 championships.

Sophomore Andrew Zwirlein (112), junior Brad Hucke (135), and seniors Tom Pangborn (152), Alex LePoidevin (171), and Nick Ryan (275) all won individual titles for Arrowhead.
