It’s the first day back to school; students walk down the hallways waving hi to old friends lost to the summer, sprinting to classes to make a good impression, and catching up on all that old gossip.

    Now, imagine being the new kid and entering all these first day thrills alone. That is why Arrowhead has the Ambassador program which is run through Key Club.

          On August 31^st, when the freshmen went for their first day, so did a handful of upperclassmen; however, they weren’t solving math problems or buying lunch. Instead, they were getting to know the transfers, the foreign exchanged, and the brand new.

Senior Emily Burke, head of the program and VP of Key Club, ran show. She set up “get to know each other” games followed by small, group tours of the school, football and soccer fields, and the pool. After was a personal lunch with the kids where Arrowhead students got to learn more about Joao Misk from Brazil or Pip Atkinson from Australia.

          “It was really exciting to show the kids around and do as best as possible to prevent first day jitters,” Burke said.

          The day ended with some “see yah tomorrows,” and guidance counselor Kathie Mittich was all smiles.

          “The day ended on a really high note guys. The program really shoed the kids they didn’t need to be nervous, only eager to start tomorrow,” Burke said to the Arrowhead student group afterwards.

         Burke closed the day showing that being an Ambassador has its perks: getting first dibs on the transfer kids, discovering new vocabulary with the foreign exchanged girl from Belgium, and starting the year with a new friend.
