In previous years, the fishing season does not begin until middle of April, or sometimes even in May. This year is like no any, as everything is coming early due to the warm weather. The weather has been at a all times high through the past month, breaking records left and right and also bringing spring animals out early.

The middle of March was the season to fish this year, as in West River the bull head and perch started to bite, as well as the trout swimming upstream way to early. The positive side to fishing West River is whenever the fish are in there, you can fish for them. The same does not go for trout due to the season not opening up until April 1^st. "The fish are going to be done spawning by the time the season opens for trout, and the same goes for most animals like turkeys. By the time May 1^st comes around, the turkeys are going to be all done mating and become very hard to call in," says James Bassage, an avid hunter and fishermen.

Toward the end of March, the weather has gone back down to where it should be, although this may cause confusion to the wildlife. Fishing in spots such as West River, Seneca Lake, and Canandaigua Lake has been a hit or miss for fishermen. "One day you will slam the bull head, and the next you’re lucky to even get a bite," Bassage says. Hopefully, this year’s fishing can improve, and fishermen all around can catch the fish of a lifetime.
