What if all those stories we loved so much as children weren’t intended to be stories? What if they were really warnings? This truth, only known by a scarce few is the propelling theme of the new series Grimm. Crime drama meets story time, this show exceeds expectations far beyond anything you could imagine. The main character is Nick Burkhardt, played by David Giuntoli. He is a homicide detective who has discovered that he is descended from a long line of supernatural hunters called Grimms. It is the purpose of the Grimms to keep humanity safe from the wide range of creatures that secretly exist in our world. His job is ridiculously hard, considering he can’t explain to his partner Hank Griffin (Russell Hornsby) or even his girlfriend Juliette Silverton (Bitsie Tulloch) that the criminals he fights have supernatural powers.

That’s where my favorite character comes in! Silas Weir Mitchell plays Monroe, a Wieder Blutbad who helps Nick with his vast knowledge about the creatures he goes up against. He’s not a policeman or anything, he actually fixes clocks for a living but if it wasn’t for Monroe, Nick would be completely lost. Blutbaden, translated to "Bloodbath" in German, are wolf-like creatures that have increased strength, keen senses of smell and can be very violent. They infer to the story of Red Riding Hood in the fact that Blutbaden are extremely provoked by the color red, but Monroe is different. He is tame and an ally of the Grimm when they would otherwise be arch enemies, and there are many jokes throughout the show about how housebroken he is. I spend the majority of the episode when I watch, freaking out if Monroe gets hurt or goes missing.

The best part about watching Grimm is seeing all the different creatures, and hearing their stories twisted into crime dramas. It airs Friday nights at 9 PM on NBC. I have so much more I could say, but I’m resisting so you can find out for yourselves, and I highly recommend you watch from the beginning! If you’re thinking Grimm is just like Once Upon a Time you’re very wrong: Does Once Upon a Time have elephant guns and pheromone releasing goats? I don’t think so.
