As Freddy Krueger torments a young teenager, he asks her, "Do you remember me?" I thought to myself ,while watching yet another remake, Hollywood has churned out with dreams of big bucks and no originality. Yes, I remember, I remember when this series scared me and Robert Englund donned the iconic glove and red and green striped sweater. A Nightmare on Elm Street (‘10) is the latest to hop off the remake gravy train. With a new Freddy, new twist on the story and new young and hip cast, some fans of original will be disappointed or indifferent.

The remake has the same plot for the most part, a man haunts the dreams of teenagers and if you are killed by him in your sleep, you die in real life. It has the same characters, such as; Nancy is the protagonist who is Freddy’s favorite. The new version puts more emphasis on the suspicions of Freddy being a child molester, and then parents found out and burnt him alive. Before he was just a child killer, now he is a child molester seeking vengeance in the dreams of the teenagers who ratted him out to their parents.

A noticeable difference from the previous entries in the series is the absence of Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger. Instead, Jackie Earle Haley dons the burnt flesh and the iconic glove. Haley is actually quite good as Freddy for what he has to work with and the shoes he is trying to fill, but it would have been much better had Englund played Freddy. Some might remember him as the actor who played Rorschach in the graphic novel adaptation, Watchmen. The acting was ok by the supporting cast a.k.a. Freddy’s victims. I especially didn’t like the actress who played Nancy. In the original she was much better, smarter and showed more emotion when her friends died. Overall, typical level of acting to expect in today’s era of horror films.

As a diehard fan of the A Nightmare on Elm Street series, I was very nervous to see this remake, especially with a new actor playing Freddy, but Haley was actually good. It’s just the rest of the cast that wasn’t. The movie isn’t awful; it’s just a disappointment considering how great the original was. It was actually entertaining and had some jumpy moments but after watching it, I felt dirty, like I had cheated and felt the urge to watch the original. On a scale of one to ten, the film deserves a five, mainly for Haley doing a good job trying to fill the big shoes left by Englund. If you’re really interested, wait until it comes out on DVD, considering there are going to be better films out in theaters in weeks to come.
