The Boondock Saints II: “Let’s Do Some Gratuitous Violence”

The MacManus brothers are back in the sequel to the cult hit from 1999, The Boondock Saints. Director Troy Duffy brings back the same great over the top violence, humor and most of the beloved characters from the original, even some unexpected ones. With lots of returning characters and inside jokes from the first film, The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day is a film that fans of the original cult classic will likely enjoy.

10 years after the MacManus brothers unleashed their bloody quest for vengeance and justice, the brothers are now in Ireland with their father when they hear news that a priest was killed in their neighborhood in the same method they killed criminals. To clear their names and do right by a good man, the brothers go back to Boston to find out who is trying to send a message to them and send one right back via some powerful handguns. At the same time the FBI has a investigator trying to find out if it was the brothers or not and the agent just so happens to be the protégé to Paul Smecker, played by Willem Dafoe in the original.

In all honesty, the movie isn’t perfect, in some ways far from it, but does that mean it’s a bad movie? No. The first film was great and was fun to watch. The same goes for the sequel. It is great to revisit these characters that were so great and memorable from the first and even meet some new ones who are entertaining, such as the brother’s new sidekick, Romeo. This is a movie that fans of the original will get the most out of and enjoy the most. While watching the film, there were just so many fun moments and hilarious parts with new material and throwbacks to some favorite parts from the original. If you didn’t like the first one, don’t bother with this one. If you haven’t seen the original, pick both up, have some friends over and have a double feature. If you’re one of those people who are part of the cult following this movie has, you are sure to have a great time watching it, just don’t take it seriously. It was not made to win awards or please critics, it was made for fans of the original and those are who will truly enjoy this movie.
