On Saturday, January 8^th, the first of several cheer competitions took place at the Fairport Ultimate Cheer and Dance Competition. The varsity team swept the crowd away winning first place, placing them in 8^th place out of the 28 teams. This is quite a feat for any team, but being only 1/3 the size of the other schools, this makes it quite a celebratory accomplishment.
Vanessa DeValle, Lexi Perrotte, Ciarra Smith, Mckenzie Colf, and Alyssa came in 3^rd place out of five teams as the JV team. After losing Sabrina Smith because of an injury, the team has taken it rough and hopefully they will be able to make it up next weekend in Dansville!
In their division, the modified girls, coached by Mrs. DeRue, came in third place as well. Mrs. DeRue has devised a plan to increase the difficulty of their routines to hopefully push the girls into first place next weekend!
Mrs. Lahue says, "There are many competitions coming up. If you have never been to one, you owe yourself to check it out." The athleticism needed to do the routines has dramatically increased and cheering certainly isn’t what it used to be. The girls strive to be stronger, more flexible and balanced, and better performing stunts, jumps, and tumbles. These competitive routines need several hours to perfect.
The weekend following the Fairport competition, the girls went to Dansville on Saturday and to Buffalo on Sunday. On the 30^th, they will end the month at Canandaigua Academy.
The Marcus Whitman Varsity team is going for a league title next month on the 13th at Midlakes and the 20^th, for a sectional title, at RIT. These girls are more than ready and all the other schools better be ready to, because they have something coming for them.
