The Blind Side tells the true story of Michael Oher, now a player for the Baltimore Ravens. The films shows how he came from nothing and being a traumatized homeless boy to being a football star because of one family who took him in and made him part of their family. At first glance, it seemed like a formulaic sports films that has been done before and Sandra Bullock hasn’t been in many good films recently, so it seemed like it wouldn’t be worth checking out, but this critic could not have been any more wrong. The Blind Side is an amazing movie that will make you laugh, cry and pull you in until the credits roll.

The story is uplifting and engrossing, but it’s not sappy; it does feature some gritty moments, showing where Oher came from and how life in the projects was like for him. The acting is excellent with Sandra Bullock turning in the best performance in her career as Leigh Anne Touhy, the woman who brought Michael Oher into her family. Her character is a strong woman who will do anything for her family and shows she isn’t afraid of anyone when it comes to helping and protecting them. Her husband, played by Tim McGraw was also a very likeable charming man, very different from his abusive role in the football movie Friday Night Lights. All the aspects from the acting, the writing, the narrative and the directing were pulled off well to make an excellent film that has something for the entire family.

The Blind Side isn’t your typical football movie. The first hour of it is about Michael and how he comes to be taken in by the Touhys and how he goes from being a quiet, lonely boy to becoming a member of their family. The second half shows him joining the high school football team and how he is a very protective person on and off the field. When deciding what to see at the movies with your family or by yourself, skip the big blockbuster movies like New Moon and watch a truly great movie, The Blind Side.
