Homecoming means various things to different people. It’s a time for the sports team after many away games to come back to their home turf and play with their school cheering them on. Sports fans see it as a chance to cheer and support their team at home while hoping for a win. For girls homecoming also means class attendants and the fight for Homecoming Princess.

Homecoming can go from being an honor your classmates give to you because you represent the class or it can turn into a competition over who’s the most popular. “When it comes to choosing an attendant to represent his or her class, it should be someone who represents the class in the most positive way and they don’t necessarily have to be popular or well known,” stated junior Sarah Scales.

Although the idea is too vote for the person who most represents your class, some classes take a different approach in deciding who to vote for, “Most people do it as a joke, some people take it seriously, but some people do it as a joke it all depends on the class. It’s not so much about popularity, if people like you they will vote for you,” commented junior Amanda Hargan.

For some people who get nominated it becomes more than a joke, it can be taken very seriously hopes of winning can turn in to tears or anger. “I think it’s really pretty lame how some girls put pressure on others to vote for them. Its ridiculous and the winners should really be based on who the majority votes for on their own, without all the pressure of whiny girls. I’ve seen chicks flat out yell at each other across the hall and I’m sitting there like ‘why? Is there really a point in that?’ And then there are the “hopefuls” who didn’t win but really regret not winning, so they go in the girl’s bathroom (girl or boy) and cry about it,” stated sophomore Sam Dean.

Basketball attendant and homecoming princess, the honor of being nominated or winning is viewed in many different ways by students. Some see it as a joke; others see it as a popularity contest, no matter how it’s looked at, the winner is representing the entire class, popular and well known or not, that is something to consider while voting in coming years.
