“…Clothing displaying inappropriate gestures, language, violence, sexual innuendoes, drug or alcohol advertisements are not allowed…” so clearly states rule eight of the dress code.

Even so there are the few people (usually males) whose derogatory shirts slip by seemingly unnoticed, shirts displaying greatly endowed girls with minimal clothes in some pose, typically on a car. Such shirts are worn each day and the wearer of the shirt goes unpunished.

A typical student has five classes a day, meaning he goes through numerous teachers and school officials without any of them saying a word about the offensive nature of the shirt.

Why would anybody buy a shirt that is so degrading towards females? It’s shirts like this slipping by and the media that make girls think they have to have “perfect bodies” to get the right guy’s attention. Shirts like this aren’t healthy for a girl’s mental development and shouldn’t be allowed on campus.

More than half, 62%, of the students polled said that shirts displaying derogatory pictures of girls in minimal clothing shouldn’t be allowed on campus. Only 32% of students said it should be allowed, leaving a small six percent to say it doesn’t matter.

When deciding to ban clothing, one must take double standards into consideration. If we banned girls pictured in minimal clothing on guy’s shirts, do we also ban guys wearing minimal clothing on girls’ shirts? Should this be more accepted and allowed? Perhaps the staff is just being too lax on dress code rules.

That’s not the case. Mrs. Smith and the staff try their best to catch any student wearing anything that doesn’t abide by dress code rules. Teachers typically just want to focus on getting through the lesson plan with as little disturbance possible, so it’s understandable that sometimes kids slip through. “If a girl can’t wear it to school, why should a guy be allowed to wear it on a shirt?” Mrs. Smith says when asked how the school handles this situation.
