Foreign exchange students come to Lincoln, California from across the world. These students are from everywhere from Europe to the far eastern side of Asia.
Mrs. Wyatt runs the foreign exchange program for Lincoln High School, when the students sign up for the exchange program they don’t really have a choice on what city they will end up in. The six students that occupy our campus were randomly chosen to attend Lincoln High School for the year. So far, the students are having a great time.
So, what is it like to totally change your culture and everything you know in only a few days? It’s complicated. All of the foreign exchange students had to overcome a few complications. Here in America everything from the food to the transportation is different.
Junior, Ji-Earn (Julie) Jeong, (from Korea) is used to a language, which is based on tone, and trying to get used to a Latin based language, but besides that challenge she is doing well on her English skills. “In Korea every meal is eaten with rice and chopsticks. Here they put too much butter in everything, but now I’m actually starting to like it” Julie said. Here in California she likes the houses. In Korea the houses are almost like apartments due to the fact that Korea has so little room and so many people. “I like it here in California, it is cool” Julie alleged.
Senior Sevino Companale (from Italy) came to America not even knowing how to speak English. Another problem Sevino had with America was that in Italy the drinking age is a lot lower than ours, he was used to drinking wine with his meals. The classes Sevino enjoys at Lincoln High School are Wood Shop and P.E. All of Sevino’s classmates say he is very talented when it comes to sports. Sevino is on the varsity soccer team to prove it.
Senior, Robert Heymann’s (from Germany) only problem with California is the weather, he dislikes the cold morning and the scorching afternoons. In Germany the weather is constant Right now in Germany the hottest temperatures are in the 50’s. Robert also has problems with getting around to places. He stated, “Without a car here you have no hope of going any where.” Robert likes the people here and says they are nicer and easier to get along with.
