Early 8 AM practices over breaks, long hours daily at the YMCA and straining physical activity does not sound appealing to the average high school student, but for senior swimmer Nicholas Colston, this is life. While Colston started swimming just three years ago, he is no stranger to the water.
“I knew how to swim before that, but sophomore year was the first time I swam competitively,” he said.
Colston joined the swim team because his brother did, and he was looking for a winter sport to keep him in shape between soccer and lacrosse.
“I enjoy the challenge and seeing my times go down because of all the hard work I put in at practice,” Colston said.
Although he said the practices are tough and extremely strenuous, it all pays off in the end.
Not only does Colston get personal gain from swimming, but senior teammate Julia Lockmyer said he benefits the team as well.
“Nick always makes practices better,” Lockmyer said. “Even when we’re dying during sets, he still makes it fun.”
Along with humor, head coach Matt Johnsen said Colston brings another element to the team: dedication.
“Colston has great leadership, character and always shows a winning attitude,” Johnsen said.
Not only is his devotion evident to his coaches, but it is clear to his teammates as well.
“Nick puts everything he has into every set,” Lockmyer said. “He really is someone for underclassmen to look up to.”
