Warm pancakes hot off the griddle, juicy sausage, scrambled eggs – just a typical breakfast for Hoover students.

This fall, the cafeteria has begun serving up breakfast every morning in the normal lunch line. Breakfast is available to all students from 6:45 in the morning until the beginning of the first study hall period.

Sole breakfast server Mrs. Cathy Cunningham admits that even she is still a little in the dark about why it was started.

“I think [the school made the change] because all the other schools—Lake, Jackson, Glenoak—all have breakfast,” she said.

Even though she’s not exactly sure why it was started, Cunningham said that she is still behind the decision.

“I think it’s a good idea,” she said. “It’s a good start to their day.”

Freshman Brian Dulus agrees.

“Some kids don’t have time to pick something up at home,” Dulus said.

Dulus said that he’s taking full advantage of the new line.

“I buy about three times a week,” he said.

However, junior Brittany Kasturiarachi said that she is not so fond of the change.

“I think it’s a waste of the school’s money,” Kasturiarachi said. “Kids can just eat at home and not spend their money.”

Even though she’s opposed to the change, Kasturiarachi still thinks that eating breakfast is necessary for students.

“It’s the most important meal of the day,” she said.

Whether or not students eat breakfast, kids are bound to get hungry throughout a long day at school. Even though he has sixth period lunch, Dulus keeps in mind the students who eat later.

“If I had a later lunch period it would be helpful,” he said.

Cunningham said that every day, the line serves cold breakfast items.

“We have cereal, breakfast bars, poptarts, we have fresh fruit, iced coffee, water,” she said.

But every other day, a hot breakfast is on the menu.

“Tuesdays and Thursdays we serve breakfast burritos, sausage and pancake on a stick, egg, sausage and cheese bagels—anything hot, really,” Cunningham said.

Sounds good, right? So then why is it that almost no one is visiting the line on a regular basis?

Ignorance may be the main cause.

“We’re having a problem getting the word out that we offer breakfast now,” Cunningham said.

Many upperclassmen have the privilege of late arrival, so they don’t get to school until after breakfast has been closed.

However, the start of breakfast could be being overshadowed by the fact that the Snack Shack was removed from the cafeteria. Even Dulus, a freshman, has heard the gossip.

“I’m kind of mad about it,” he said. “I never really got to experience it.”

Kasturiarachi is also angry about the loss of the ‘Shack’.

“I liked the Snack Shack,” she said. “You didn’t have to go through the A la Carte line. I just plain don’t like the idea of breakfast.”

In contrast, Cunningham thinks that the switch from having a Snack Shack to a breakfast line will be beneficial for the students.

“I think the kids will be healthier for it,” she said. “It’s a good trade.”

Despite the small setbacks and rough start, Cunningham said she is optimistic, and still behind breakfast all the way.

“So far, so good,” she said.
