our average chick flick is not a movie that beats the box office and grosses over $27.5 million in its first weekend. With these statistics, it’s obvious that “He’s Just Not That Into You” is not your average chick flick.
In addition to some advice commentaries, the movie follows the story of Gigi (Gennifer Goodwin), Beth (Jennifer Aniston), Anna (Scarlett Johansson), Janine (Jennifer Connelly) and Mary (Drew Barrymore) in their pursuits of men who will not give them the relationship they desire. Gigi cannot find a guy who is interested in her, Beth wants to marry her boyfriend Neil (Ben Afleck), Anna is involved with a married man, Ben (Bradley Cooper) and Janine, Ben’s wife, suspects that he is lying to her, and last Mary cannot meet a man in person but instead is rejected via internet. However, with the help of some brutally honest friends, like Alex (Justin Long), who can simply say “look, he’s just not that into you,” they might be steered in the right direction to finding happiness.
A lineup of big names raises expectations for this movie and it does not fail to deliver. It may be more initially appealing for females, but the comedy is funny for guys as well. The driving force of the comedy comes with the self-help sections of the movie in which they show random interviews of people suffering problems like “if he’s not calling you…” or “if she’s not sleeping with you…”
The chemistry with the castmembers is undeniable as you truly feel sympathetic for Goodwin’s character when she is rejected time and time again. Another charismatic couple comes in the form of Afleck and Anniston’s on-screen romance and their experience shows. Long’s previous roles have been the funny guy, like in “Accepted,” but he takes on a more serious role as the ultimate player and Gigi’s own “Dr. Phil.”
The intertwining of characters provides an excellent story line. It is more unique than the typical chick flick plot, although it is somewhat predictable. It ranges from the perfect girl’s night out movie to a soon-to-be date night classic.
