This summer was a hot one; here are the top movies that people saw to beat the heat. According to IMDB, here are the top 10 box office summer movies:

10. “Get Smart” made a total gross of $128,603,482. It came out June 20 and became a hit. This comedy involves the adventure of two secret agents: Maxwell Smart (Steve Carrel) and Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway). They both work for a secret agency called CONTROL and are working against KAOS, their enemy. When the CONTROL agency is attacked, Smart and Agent 99 are sent to discover KAOS’ plans. Suspense builds as Smart discovers that anyone can become a hero.



9.“Wanted.” After coming out June 27, this action movie made a total of $134,168,655. Starring James McAvoy, Morgan Freeman and Angelina Jolie, this movie is filled with action-packed scenes and suspenseful cliff hangers. Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy) is a nobody whose life is going nowhere but down. When his father is murdered, Gibson tries to discover the killer. He soon meets Fox (Angelina Jolie), who introduces him to The Fraternity. Gibson learns that he has super-human abilities and that The Fraternity is a secret assassin group that professionally murders people. As Gibson becomes involved, he learns that the most important thing to remember is that only you can control your destiny.



8.“Mamma Mia” hit the theaters July 18 and was the eighth top movie this summer. This remade movie is a tribute to ABBA and is a musical hit. Meryl Streep plays Donna Sheridan, the mother of bride-to-be Sophie Sheridan (Amanda Seyfried). Sophie grew up not knowing who her father is. The day before her wedding, she finds her mother’s diary and narrows her possible father choices down to three men. She secretly invites all three of them to her wedding expecting to find her true father once they arrive. When the big day arrives, Sophie learns one of the most important lessons of all: family is the most important thing to have.



7. Making $152,595,674, “Sex and the City” comes in at number seven. The same cast from the show appears in the movie. In this episode, Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) is finally marrying her man. But the wedding plans don’t go quite as planned. Of course, Bradshaw looks to her best friends Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon), Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) and Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall) for consolation. Throughout all of her wedding bliss and confusion, Bradshaw finds that in her toughest and roughest times, she can always count on her friends.



6. Coming in at number six is an animated comedy, “Kung Fu Panda,” making a total of $214,227,690. This animated movie tells the story of Po, a lazy panda in the Valley of Peace. Po (voice of Jack Black) is a huge kung fu fan, but unfortunately, can’t put his “skills” to the test by working in his family’s shop. Unexpectedly, Po is called to complete an ancient prophecy and is finally able to use his kung fu abilities. However, it isn’t exactly what he expected, as Po must somehow save everyone from the evil snow leopard, Tai Lung (voice Ian McShane). In his battle, Po learns about kung fu, his village and his heroes, but mostly about himself.



5. This next movie takes us very far into the future; where all of mankind has abandoned Earth and left a small robot to clean up the planet. Making $219,398,090, “Wall-E” is the number five movie of this summer. Ben Brutt is the voice of the robot, Wall-E and Elissa Knight voices Eve, a newly invented robot that Wall-E falls in love with. When Wall-E and Eve leave the abandoned Earth to find the large space cruiser that all of the humans have ventured to, they make a decision that will soon leave the hope of mankind in their hands.

4. Will Smith stars in the number four movie, “Hancock.” Released on July 2, “Hancock” made a total of $227,946,274. Hancock is a washed up superhero that is annoying the town. Although he is saving lives, he is costing the town millions of dollars in damage. When he saves the life of Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman), a public relations executive, Embrey does everything he can to change Hancock’s image. In attempting to do so, Embrey proves that everyone can use a hero.

3. Called back into action, Harrison Ford plays the infamous archaeologist Indiana Jones in the movie “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” Indiana Jones and his crew managed to blow up the box office making a total of $316,202,690. In this fourth epic movie, Jones is taken to Peru, where he must carefully piece together a coded message. After following step by step, Jones comes across the crystal skull, which he must return to its rightful place before it falls into Irina’s (Cate Blanchett) hands. If Irina gets a hold of the crystal skull, she can gain powers that put the entire world in danger. Jones and his friends travel to unknown places as they once again save the world.

2. “Iron Man” made the box office rating of number two this summer. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is the star of this movie. Stark is a man who knows everything there is to know about engineering. However, when in Afghanistan demonstrating a new missile he created, Stark is captured and taken hostage. While imprisoned, his captors want him to make a missile for them. Instead, Stark creates an armor suit to escape. Once freed, Stark finds that he must return to Afghanistan to stop the insurgents. This humorous and action-packed film caught the box office off guard, as it made a total gross of $318,006,770.

1. The number one movie is “The Dark Knight.” Released July 18, it was one of the most anticipated summer movies this year. Christian Bale stars as Bruce Wayne/Batman. “The Dark Knight” is filled with suspense, action, drama and even romance as Batman battles yet another villain. The late Heath Ledger became the star of the movie as The Joker. His twisted ways and carefully thought out plans make the movie even better. Without even the slightest bit of surprise, “The Dark Knight” made a total of $513,238,453; having only “Titanic” (1997) beat its gross at $600,779,824.
