-National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalists are Rachel Bouer, Brenna Case, Nicole Hess, Megan Lilley and Andrew Spehar. Commended students include JD Elder, Bill Flaherty, Sahiba Gill, Andrew Glaws, Phillip Hamilton, Alex Huth, Chris Mayer, James Mayer, Brenden McDearmon, Mitch Ramsey, and Chase Weinman. These students were chosen among 34,000 students nationwide for their high scores on the 2006 PSAT/NMSQT and by meeting high academic standards. These finalists will all compete for a $2500 scholarship award.

-The Drama Club performed “Sabrina Fair” Nov. 9-11. The play starred seniors Maggie Morrow, Ben Rafferty, Aaron Reese, and juniors Lauren Conversino, Michelle DeBellis, Chris Nichols and Stephen Robison, and sophomore AJ Jajack.

-The Veterans Day Program Nov. 8, which was broadcast live to the North Canton community, can be viewed on Ch. 11. See www.northcanton.sparcc.org/~tv11/index.htm. The program included a salute to area veterans as well as to three soldiers who fought in the Battle of Mogadishu in Somalia.

-Thanksgiving Harvest Meal is a committee that delivers hot meals to the needy, and they’re looking for volunteers on Thanksgiving Day to help deliver them. Volunteers must report to First Christian Church, 6900 Market Ave North at 10 a.m.. Both packers and drivers are needed.

-The Brown Derby Teens of the Month for Spetember were Sahiba Gill and Andrew Spehar and for October were Brittany Orban and Tony Kendle. Each month a senior boy and girl are recognized for their outstanding achievements and are awarded a gift certificate to the Brown Derby.

-The Akron Independent Film Festival will be Apr. 3-6, 2008. Filmmakers have until Feb. 26 to submit their work and be considered for this contest.

-National Honor Society students decorated a Christmas tree Nov. 13 and 15 at the Hoover Historical Society.

-Ms. Rita Palmer (above) won the person of character award for Stark County. The award was presented by Stark County Character Counts, which is through the Stark County Education Center. She was especially recognized for organizing the Veteran’s Day graduation ceremony and for raising $12,000 for Mississippi Bay St. Louis High School.

-The Speech and Debate Team attended the Perry Tournament Nov 2-3. Seniors Marissa Black and Rachel Bouer placed second and Sahiba Gill and Phillip Hamilton placed fifth in Public Forum Debate. Junior Jeff Schumacher won fifth in Impromptu and junior Jonny Rice won fifth in Student Congress.



-First semester exams are scheduled for Dec. 19, 20 and 21.
