As California is in a rut, we all know that there needs to be some sort of change. Pointing fingers at whose to blame won’t get us anywhere. It’s been a roller coaster ride with former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, but now someone new is in office. On November 2, 2010, registered voters participated in the election for the new Governor and various propositions. Jerry Brown, a Democrat, won the election with about a 53.5% win over Meg Whitman with 41.2%. It was a close race, but Brown was able to rise to the top.

With both of these candidates spending over millions of dollars for their campaign, there is a one question we might ask, where did all of this money come from? With Meg Whitman using $141.6 million of her own money and raising $31.3 million for her campaign, resulting to a grand total of 172.9 million dollars! Luckily, Brown spent $67.3 million which isn’t anything compared to Whitman, but I think that’s an issue where money should have been spent more wisely. Heck, the money could have been used towards California’s empty pockets! Besides this fault, Brown has some solutions to fix California.

Jerry Brown, who has experience of being Governor for California twice, is going in for his third term. Hoping that his familiarity of being a Governor before, citizens are relying on him to get California out of this pit. I think Brown will be able to serve California well with one step at a time.

California is the third state to have the highest unemployment rate with about 12.4%. Brown takes on the issue of creating more jobs in infrastructure, manufacturing, clean energy jobs, and to provide job training. He also feels that a group should be made to fight on keeping jobs and wants to cut back on regulations. Another issue that affects us, students the most is education.

Education is something that is getting affected the most based on losing teachers, large classroom sizes, and shorter school years. Better yet, paying for college is at its worst because tuition is rising and hardly any financial aid is given. Brown feels that he will conquer the education problem by investing in the time to make a plan for community colleges and transferring credits. He wants to improve state test scores, allow school districts to make more decisions, improve graduation rates, and other ideas. However, budget cuts will still take place until California is out of the $24.5 billion deficit—a lot more than was expected for Brown to face.

We all know that is takes time and progress for improvement. Problems aren’t going to be solved overnight. I think Brown will do anything that he can to make people happy and to have California glow again. We can only trust that Brown will it right. It’s a hard job to do, but we hope that we put it in the right hands of the new Governor Jerry Brown.
