A new club that started this year welcomes all abilities—whether you’re on the bunny hill or on a bowl—for winter fun.

"For a school with 1,800 students, we should be offering a lot more clubs for the kids who aren’t into basketball, football, band or choir," janitor Dave Cromer said.

This is one of the reasons why Cromer is a sponsor (along with science teacher Garrett Hall) of the new Snowboard and Ski Club.

There was a strong first response to this club, too, with about 60 students attending the first meeting.

And, yes, even though there has been little snow, the club is still possible.

They have, however, been impacted by it. "We have only been able to meet at Sleepy Hollow twice, but it has made the group that much more excited to get out on the hill," Hall said.

They go to Sleepy Hollow every Wednesday from 5-8 p.m..

They are provided with a special rate of only having to pay $10 for a lift ticket and $14 if they want lift and equipment rental.

This club isn’t limited solely to Sleepy Hollow. On Feb. 25, they are going to Afton Alps in southeastern Minnesota.

Students are paying $29 for the trip, along with a little more for equipment rental if they don’t have their own.

The club’s goal for next year is to go to Colorado to ski/snowboard during spring break.

They would like to spend four days skiing. Price and details are still to be determined.

Currently they are focused on winter sports. Cromer says that he would like to expand into kayaking and hiking during the warmer seasons.

He says that he’d rather call the club SEP’s Alpine Club because of this, but members wanted to stick with the current name.

"I really just want it to have the feeling of being in Colorado," Cromer said.

The group’s president is junior Jake McNeece, vice president is junior Dylan Buchheit and sophomore Sam Flynn is the secretary.

McNeece started the club to give his friends an organized group to hang out in.

He has been snowboarding since sixth grade, winning the Winter Games that was hosted at Sleepy Hollow last year.

McNeece isn’t the only one with experience, however. Hall began in fifth grade with a borrowed board and makeshift "kickers and table tops."

Cromer has been skiing for 39 years and says he is planning on teaching his granddaughter soon.

This shouldn’t scare off newbies, the leadership says. Students of all skill levels are in the group. Lessons are available to the ones who need them.

For more information on dates and joining the club, see Hall (room 323), Cromer or McNeece.
