It’s no secret that Iowa’s climate is extremely diversified, with hot summers, cold winters, rain, snow and everything in between.

We have learned that the change of seasons means a change in many habits, including changes in our wardrobe but being warm and looking cute can sometimes take some effort.

WINTER COATS

While a winter coat’s main function is to add warmth, it can also be stylish and show off personality. Bold-colored coats with a bow or a plaid pea coat are fashionable and warm.

"To keep the chills away outside, I grab my pink pea coat and a warm hat to top it off," junior Shelbi Hanson says.

ACCESSORIES

Hats are cute winter accessories that also have warm benefits. The human head loses heat faster than any other part of the body, so hats are an easy solution.

"I love wearing scarves in the winter," senior Natalie McComas said. "They’re a cute accessory and they keep you warm."

Gloves and scarves are perfect winter accessories because they can be so cheap. Along with the warm plus cute benefits, their price makes variety possible.

In the last few years, scarves have made a gigantic, trendy comeback. They come in literally hundreds of shapes, colors and patterns and have a way of adding excitement and warmth to outfits.

Having different styles and colors of hats, scarves and gloves is the best way to change up a "winter look" and show off style.

BOOTS

Although she says they haven’t been needed much so far this winter, McComas is one of many who also like wearing boots.

"They keep you warm in the cold and dry in the snow or rain," she said.

Winter boots can be costly but well worth it. They’re warm, durable and fashionable. When it comes to boots, we actually have a good excuse for investing in a good pair because of the snow and ice that our winters are capable of.

Whether they are UGGs, riding boots or combat boots, a great pair should provide warmth and be a neutral color so that they will match with a lot of different outfits.

"I wear the regular UGGS usually but I like them to be soft and fuzzy so they keep me comfortable inside and out," Hanson said.

Even though the UGG Australia brand’s roots are traceable to surfers on beaches in Australia, they are extremely popular among high school students and seem to be tough during the snowy months.

LAYERING

With the cold weather outside—and the unpredictable temperatures at school—layers add versatility and they look cute.

"Wear a cardigan over your flannel shirt," freshman Meredith Fillman advises. "I think it’s cute and it keeps you warmer."

Layering is simple. Starting with a tank top or t-shirt, throw on a cardigan or sweater and then add a jacket. It’s casual, cute and a good way to make sure that one is comfy no matter what the heat is set on.

"I like to wear crew neck sweaters with a scarf and fuzzy socks so my (toes) stay toasty warm," Hanson said.

Another thing to remember when dressing for chillier months is that pants are not the only option.

Pairing dresses, skirts or oversized sweaters and sweatshirts with legging or tights can be chic and just as warm as wearing pants.
