Despite struggles on special teams throughout this year, the varsity football team improved on its 1-8 record from a year ago, posting a 7-4 this season in 2010, including a first round playoff victory against Johnston.
Some of the success can be attributed to sophomore quarterback Kyle Starcevich for leading the Ram offense with over 1,700 passing yards and 18 touchdowns (13 passing and 5 rushing).
Senior Jake Sargent was the leading running back with over 1,200 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground.
"Preparation is key to success," coach Denny Muller said. "The football team was like a family; everyone liked each other and they helped each other out if they had any questions or problems."
"It was great," Kyle Starcevich said of the season. He said it was a lot of fun and it was nice to get as far as they did.
"It would’ve been nice to go deeper in the playoffs, but overall it was a good year," he said.
"Seeing a young team improve each week," defensive coordinator Don Starcevich said. "That’s what the best part of the season was for the football team.
"They improved mostly by playing tough and finishing close ball games," he said. "It takes a close team to prepare for this kind of sport because it is a team sport and the other players help each other out."
The team improved through hard work and pushing each other to improve their skills.
"It was cool to be a part of a group of guys that wanted to accomplish the same goal," Kyle Starcevich said.
Muller agrees that being around a group of athletes who are willing to work hard to get better is one of the best part of coaching.
The young players returning next year say they will learn from the good example that was set by this year’s seniors in the off-season. The underclassmen are already beginning to work hard in preparation for next season.
Fortunately for the Rams, they have a number of key players returning for next year.
Both Muller and Coach Starcevich say they are excited for the 2011 season because they have a large number of returning starters coming back next year.
Players, too, are putting 2010 behind them and looking to the prospects for the 2011 edition of the squad.
"I’m really excited about next year," Kyle Starcevich said. "We have a lot of young players back."
