Teenagers think that The Hills is a reality show, but is it? People began doubting the reliability of the show because of the controversy surrounding it‘s dramatic plot. Fans are distraught and confused with being unable to tell what parts of the show are real or fake. Is there any amount of light that can be shed on this issue to reveal the truth?

For those who are not familiar with reality shows, they are supposed to involve regular and ordinary people that go on with their everyday lives, accompanied by a few television cameras. They do not have lines, scripts, or practice time for facial expressions or any such thing. They create and place themselves in their own dramatic situations.

The Hills is a television series featured on MTV on Monday nights at 10/9c. It’s about Lauren Conrad, an intern at Teen Vogue, a fashion magazine. She arrives in Los Angeles, California to commit herself to attending classes at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. The Hills depicts many of the challenges she faces with “school, work, and relationships,” says TV Beta. This season of The Hills demonstrates Conrad’s intense life with her ex-best friend Heidi Montag, facing her ex-boyfriend Jason Wahler, and balancing her work life and party life.

A one-time cast member, Gavin Beasley, Conrad’s former date, revealed to an entertainment website that producers asked him to question Lauren Conrad “about her runway show, how long she had worked that day, when would she get off, stuff like that.”

Pause, rewind, and play again? The Hills is supposed to be a reality show without the scripts or writers. Should the producers be telling Beasley what and when to ask Conrad about her life? The cast are not supposed to be told what to say, so what’s the deal with this incident? The producers knew “that Gavin Beasley was planning to ask Conrad out on a date,” said Hollywood Gossip. The “producers [supposedly] overheard” Beasley‘s plans. Although, an MTV representative’s reaction to Beasley’s quote was contradicting. “The producers sometimes helped guide dialogue along for clarity,” but did not script it; but is guiding merely a kinder way of meaning a script or direction was involved?

Looking back at some of the newest episodes, there was one coincidence that left viewers speechless. Conrad and Montag ended up at the same club on the same night which is clear to see was no coincidence. “Lauren and Jason [Wahler] were going there, and Heidi and Spencer [Pratt] wanted to celebrate their anniversary. It wasn't planned on our behalf, but it is a little fake,” said Adam Divello, The Hills producer. “I hate to say we schedule their lives, but we definitely schedule out what we want to cover.” Is this just scheduling or an actual “stage” setting from the producers? No one can be sure anymore.

With this news about The Hills possibly being scripted, it clearly is top news. The viewers want to know everything; just the real information, not the fake. “If The Hills was scripted, that would be horrible, “exclaims Jessica Herrera, sophomore. “That’s like lying to the entire audience; what would be the point of making it fake?” Herrera sounded pretty devastated when she heard the unpleasant news. Reality shows and scripted shows differ in one crucial way; truth. Reality shows connect with people in many ways: emotionally, physically, and mentally. Viewers of The Hills want the honest answer whereas they’re not lied to. The producers are the only ones who can give entire details about the show. Will The Hills still be a hit even if their secret is revealed? “Not everything on TV is real,” admits Sehar Ali, age 16. “I watch for entertainment and as long as it does that I’m fine, but I think it would be better if it wasn’t staged.”
