At-a-glance

Remember the good old days where the sound of the bell or just the mention of the word “recess” made your day whether playing kickball, four square, two-hand touch football, basketball, and ultimate Frisbee? You’re never too old to hang out, get exercise, or play every day but high school says you are. Until this year the upperclassmen were allowed to go outside; eat and play ultimate Frisbee/Football during their lunch periods. A year before that they were also allowed to hang-out and play basketball in the gym. Now, we have nothing. Why?

“It’s strictly finances,” says principal Greg Wieczorek.

Question: How come you stopped allowing students to go outside?

Answer: “We just simply don’t have the personal because of the budget cuts we had coming from Madison last year. We had to cut positions and when we did most of those positions were willing to put extra time in their schedules for the kids. With the positions gone--without question you can imagine how hard it would be for other teachers to do so in their schedules because of the amount of sizes their classes are now. Now, if a teacher has a lesson plan and they require to go outside then its fine by me. Most of the situations are from science and gym classes.”

Did the behavior of students have any effect on this privilege?

“The students actually were very responsible. They knew how to behave and not screw up this opportunity that was given to them; their behavior was really not the problem. We thought we would have cases where kids would leave campus with any opportunity that was given to them but they didn’t.”

What if we got more volunteer moms?

“That question has come up before and the answer would also be no to that. Those mothers would have to go through a long process to be approved by the state.  They would have to have some knowledge of medical practice if one of the students was to get hurt because we would not like to get phone call from parents threatening to sue.”
