After two weeks of anticipation, Peyton Manning finally came to a decision about where he would play for the next NFL season. His choice: The Denver Broncos.
On March 19th, Peyton Manning called Broncos owner, John Elway, to inform him that he would play for the Broncos. Manning has agreed to a five-year 95 million dollar contract. However, if Manning is not able to play next year, the Broncos are protected by the contract signed by Manning, meaning they won’t have to pay the full 95 million.
Over the past few years the Broncos have not been a Super Bowl contender, but with the addition of Manning, according to NFL analysts, they have an 8-1 chance at making the Super Bowl next year. If the Broncos sign some more experienced and more qualified receivers they will be the team to beat next year. Denver’s defense is effective enough to hold off some of the league’s best offenses, but could still use some more experienced players to bulk them up.
Some of the sports broadcasters say that Peyton Manning has made the Broncos a Super Bowl contender because of the fact that he has gone to a Super Bowl twice and that was with a less qualified team then the Broncos. With the Broncos they have pass rushers that can penetrate the pocket and solid linebackers such as Von Miller. The only thing that the defense lacks is the defensive backs. The team is very qualified for a Super Bowl, but time will tell if they will actually make it.
The 49ers, which have most of their players that went to the NFC championship last year, have added some talented wide receivers too, as well. Even without Peyton Manning they will be a Super Bowl contender for next year. They have added players such as: Randy Moss, Brandon Jacobs, and Mario Manningham. When Manning signed with the Broncos, it opened up more options to sign key players. The current quarterback for the 49ers, Alex Smith, is a quarterback, that although still has things to learn, took his team to the NFC championship and only lost to the Super Bowl Champions by three points. The 49ers’ roster shows that they will be an excellent team without the addition of Manning.
Manning is ready for another shot at a Super Bowl ring with a new team. He told ESPN journalists, “This isn't something where I'm just building a foundation to do something in two years or three years. This is a now situation. We're going to do whatever we can to win right now. That's all I'm thinking about right now."
