Students have all heard the saying “the more involvement the better”, but some students would argue that involvement is not always better. The pressure on students to always strive to do their best with anything they do can be too much for some. The high school years of life are spent preparing for the real world, which can bring an immeasurable amount of stress. With much of the student body being involved with sports teams and school clubs it is not uncommon for some to have struggles keeping up with the heavy workload from classes.
“I am involved with sports and student government, which makes me extremely tired,” junior Victoria Aubrey said. “When I get home everyday after my practice is over all I want to do is sleep. I usually just wake up very early to finish my homework, because I am too tired the night before. Whenever I have a chance, I try to stay as organized as possible. Also, I like to get all my homework done the nights I am less busy.”
The teenage years are the time when people need the most sleep. With kids now-a-days being so busy with all their activities, they probably don’t get the recommended amount of sleep. Class meetings and student government meet in the morning before school starts, which require students to get to school early. The little hours of sleep have an impact on the way students learn in the classroom.
“My biggest problem with being so busy is not having time to study for tests, or when I am studying I just fall asleep from exhaustion,” senior Lizzy Benedetto said.
With the requirement of having a 2.0 grade point average to be eligible to play a sport, some teams go out of their way to maintain good grades. The football team has a study hall after school to complete homework and missing assignments.
“I really appreciate how coach Fairly has us do study hall, because it helps me stay on top of my work and not fall behind,” junior Grant Williams, member of the varsity football team, said.
Being involved with extra activities like different clubs, volunteer work and sports gives students an opportunity to meet people they might not normally see in school.
“I have noticed that students might tend to fall behind if they aren’t one who typically stays on top of there grades and one who is organized,” marketing co-op teacher Lori Dailey said. “Students learn and grow from experience which comes out of being involved. Involvement also gives students different opportunities to do things that they might have never done before.”
Extra Curricular activities do add a decent amount of pressure to students, but they expand high schools’ experiences. High school only comes around once, so if being involved means students will remember their days at Jackson High, then the stress will not mean as much in
