Student council convention ends with unity

Students arrived to the very last day of this years Missouri Association of Student Councils State Convention with a mixed feeling of excitement and sadness that this journey would be over.

“This week was a great experience and I am still pumped up about it,” junior Talaematafi Fuiava said. “Everything came to life”

The day consisted of a grand finale session in the big gym. It opened up with inspirational speaker Eddie Slowikowski  who got the crowd on their feet for yet another dance party. He then spoke to the students about loving themselves for who they are. And finally ended his speech with his own personal "Evolution of Dance," which made the crowd give him a standing ovation.

“My favorite part of this convention was Eddie,” executive member of student council senior Heather Auffert said. “He was so fun and energetic and really got everyone involved.”

The assembly then went into awarding the advisers who went the extra mile for their students. Truman’s very own student council adviser Angie Zarrillo was awarded with The High School Adviser of the Trails West District.

Not only were advisers awarded, but the new officer schools were announced.
  • Secretary: Timberland High School
  • Second Vice President: Thomas Jefferson Middle School
  • First Vice President: Jefferson City High School
  • President: Washington High School

The assembly finally ended and the visitors said goodbye to their host families and headed back to their cities.

But this was not the end for the hardworking Truman students. Paper was ripped off of walls, floors were vacuumed and trash was taken out. After all of their hard work, the students met one last time in the cafeteria for yet another thank you speech from Ms. Zarrillo.

“I couldn’t be more proud of my students,” Ms. Zarrillo said. “I am so thankful for every single one of them.”

The general opinion of this experience is that it created an even stronger bond to the student council.
“Our student council has come together as one,” Fuiava said. “Different cliques and grades came together and unified.”
