If you have been watching the US Open or the Tennis Channel than you would have seen Serena Williams cussing out a line judge in the semifinals of the Women’s US Open. The line judge called a foot fault when she served on second serve. Serena went over to the line judge and slammed her racket down and said a few bad words to the official. “I am going to shove this (bad word) ball down your (bad word) throat." The official told the Chair umpire, and the Chair umpire brought down the Overall Umpire and decided that it would be a point penalty and that cost her the match. The United States Tennis Association fined Serena $10,000 for cussing out the lady and $500 for breaking the racket. Serena made more money in that one match than both of those fines combined. In my opinion, the USTA didn’t fine her enough money. They said the maximum they could fine was $10,000, but there is no way that they could only fine her for that little. They should have taken the earnings she made from this tournament, plus the $10,500, and that would have equaled out to be about how much she should have lost as a result of her temper tantrum.
They also needed to take her out of the tournament; she shouldn’t have gotten the chance to win the Doubles championship with her sister. They did win the doubles tournament and Serena did have a press conference after the incident. She did not apologize to the lady who she cussed out and I am one of the few that thinks she has no character since she didn’t apologize. I am also not only disappointed in Serena’s behavior, but also the USTA and the way they handled it. They should have fined her for more money. I will go out on a limb and say I am very disappointed and terribly sorry for the way she reacted and I apologize for her to the lady whom she cussed at.
