In an effort to increase the security of the high school, the administration has decided to hire student support monitors, lock doors, and require visitor badges.

“Typically, schools that have between 900 and 1,000 students have more assistant principles or other student monitors,” Assistant Principal Glenn Mitcham said. “We are just getting in line with other schools.”

The student support monitors supervise students during lunch and between classes, secure doors in the morning, and assist with parking supervision.

“I make sure that the staff parking is clear of any students and patrol the second floor during lunch,” Student Support Monitor David Washington said.

Washington's job as a student support monitor extends beyond patrolling the hallways.

“I am here to get to know the students, help them stay on track, and realize the importance of their education,” Washington said.

Washington can be seen around the school from 10:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Tom Baranoski is the second support monitor who can be seen walking around the building earlier in the morning.

Student support monitors also have the new job of locking all doors at 7:50 a. m., with the exception of those at the front entrance and near the Science hallway.

“We have a lot of areas, like the pool for example, that have gone unsupervised,” Mitcham said.

Visitor badges are the third change to increase security by identifying people in the school who are not students or staff.

“The last couple of years we haven’t had them because we had a lot of construction workers who were in and out for the day,” Mitcham said.

While the effect of these changes remains uncertain, their goal is simple: “It is about having that satisfaction of security,” Mitcham said.
